  BACKGROUND Tim was born in the south but has lived most of his life in the north. He lived for nine years in York, leaving at the age of 14, to return south with his parents. On leaving school he went in to journalism at the Bedfordshire Times. He did a one-year pre- entry course at Sheffield in journalism. He returned to the Bedfordshire Times where he completed his three years' probation. He was then picked to start up a free newspaper in Luton where he worked for three years before moving to Bradford as a sub- editor on the Telegraph & Argus in 1981. He left again at the end of 1982 and went to work on the Northern Echo in Darlington. He left Darlington in 1986 to become editor of a free newspaper in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. This won the best free newspaper award and he was promoted to edit the paid for newspaper, which then won the national award for the best paid- for weekly newspaper. Tim was then made editor of the nearby evening newspaper the Oxford Mail. Within two years he was appointed acting managing director as well as editor. The vacancy then arose for a managing director at Bradford and Tim was able to fulfil his ambition to return to his beloved north. He started as managing director at Bradford and District Newspapers in February 1996. The company produces an award winning daily title the Telegraph & Argus and ten weekly titles both paid-for and free. The company employs over 500 people. It is part of the Newsquest Media Group, which is Britain's largest regional newspaper publisher. Tim was given additional responsibility for the Westmoriand Gazette in Kendal at the end of 1998. He was made Regional Managing Director for Bradford/Kendal and Newsquest's Lancashire papers in May 2000. As a director of the local Training and Enterprise Council, he is also chairman of the TEC's equal opportunities committee. He is also a member of the Bradford Common Purpose Advisory Board and a member of the committee set up'to try to win Bradford the European Capital of Culture award in 2008. Tim enjoys jogging and walking in the beautiful countryside near his home in llkley.
